The neighborhood cleanup is a volunteer event targeted at the old middle school grounds, Aldercrest Annex, located on 25th Ave NE and NE 200th. In 2009, 2010, and 2011, the cleanup was scheduled as part of Shoreline School District’s “Embrace Shoreline Schools” event, as Aldercrest Annex is still a property owned by the School District. In 2011 and 2012, we partnered with Friends of Aldercrest to pick up trash and whack the weeds along the fence at 25th Ave NE.
The amount of ivy growing uncontrolled along the retaining rock wall just south of the old school buildings is amazing. Even more amazing and surprising was the garbage that people shamelessly dumped everywhere. The School District does its best to keep the grass mowed under a tight budget but the weeds along the fence line on 25th Ave, along the tennis courts, and along the rock wall are not tended. The cleanup effort, held in spring each year, focuses on the garbage and untended areas particularly at the street view on 25th Ave NE. See pictures below.
It is the neighborhood’s hope that the the school grounds, used as our open recreational park, will stay kept up and usable until it becomes an official park under the City of Shoreline.
